It feels like mathematics has its own language sometimes – because it does.
To help you out, I’ve put together a list of some of the most commonly used math-related words beginning with the letter L:
Math Words That Start With L
Larger – or greater than shows that one number or value is larger than another number.
Lateral Face – the faces in a prism or pyramid that are not bases.
Law Of Cosines – allows you to find angle (or side length) measurements for triangles other than right triangles.
Law Of Exponents – one of a set of rules in algebra: exponents of numbers are added when the numbers are multiplied, subtracted when the numbers are divided, and multiplied when raised by still another exponent:
Law Of Sines – Principle of trigonometry stating that the lengths of the sides of any triangle are proportional to the sines of the opposite angles.
Leading Coefficient – the coefficient of the term of highest degree in a given polynomial.
Least Common Denominator – the smallest number that is a common denominator of a given set of fractions. Also called lowest common denominator.
Least Common Multiple – the smallest common multiple of two or more numbers.
Lemma – informal logic and argument mapping, a lemma is a generally minor, proven proposition which is used as a stepping stone to a larger result.
Length – a measure of distance.
Less Than – means something is lesser than in comparison to some other quantity. It is represented by the symbol “<“.
Like Terms – In algebra, like terms are terms that have the same variables and powers.
Limit – the value that a function (or sequence) approaches as the input (or index) approaches some value.
Line – In geometry, the notion of line or straight line was introduced by ancient mathematicians to represent straight objects.
Line Graph – A line graph is a graph that uses lines to connect individual data points.
Line Of Best Fit – refers to a line drawn through a scatter plot of data points that expresses the relationship between those points.
Linear Measurement – can be defined as a measure of length.
Liquidity – the degree to which a security can be quickly purchased or sold in the market at a price reflecting its current value.
Liter – A metric unit of volume mostly used to measure liquids.
Locus – In geometry, a locus is a set of all points, whose location satisfies or is determined by one or more specified conditions.
Logarithmic Scale – a way of displaying numerical data over a very wide range of values in a compact way.
Long Division – a method for dividing one large multi digit number into another large multi digit number.
Long Multiplication – a written method of multiplying numbers (usually a two- or three-digit number by another large number).
Longer – meaning one object is longer than another.
Longitude – The azimuthal coordinate on the surface of a sphere or on a spheroid.
Lowest Terms – the form of a fraction in which the numerator and denominator have no factor in common except 1 reduce a fraction to lowest terms.
