From Edge to Ellipsoid and Exponent Rules, there are loads of math-related words beginning with the letter E.

Here is a list of some of the most common and useful E-letter math words:

Math Words That Start With E

Eccentricity – the eccentricity of a conic section is a non-negative real number that uniquely characterizes its shape.

Echelon Form – In linear algebra, a matrix is in echelon form if it has the shape resulting from a Gaussian elimination.

Edge – a particular type of line segment joining two vertices in a polygon, polyhedron, or higher-dimensional polytope.

Element Of A Matrix – set of numbers arranged in rows and columns so as to form a rectangular array.

Element Of A Set – an element of a set is any one of the distinct objects that belong to that set.

Ellipse – a circle that has been stretched in one direction, to give it the shape of an oval.

Ellipsoid – closed surface of which all plane cross sections are either ellipses or circles.

Elliptic Geometry – a geometry in which no parallel lines exist.

Empty Set – the empty set is the unique set having no elements; its size or cardinality (count of elements in a set) is zero.

End Behavior – describes the behavior of the graph of the function at the “ends” of the x-axis.

Epsilon – a greek letter to choose any small number arbitrarily to solve any mathematical problem.

Equal Sign – the sign =, which is used in arithmetic to indicate that two numbers or sets of numbers are equal.

Equation – a statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =).

Equation Of A Line – any equation that conveys information about a line’s slope and at least one point that lies on it.

Equiangular Triangle – an equilateral triangle is a triangle in which all three sides have the same length.

Equidistant – A point is said to be equidistant from a set of objects if the distances between that point and each object in the set are equal.

Equilateral Triangle – a triangle in which all three sides have the same length.

Equivalent Equations – Two systems of equations are equivalent if they have the same solution(s).

Equivalence Relation – a binary relation that is reflexive, symmetric and transitive.

Error – the difference between a true value and an estimate, or approximation, of that value.

Eta – eta function may refer to: The Dirichlet eta function η(s), a Dirichlet series.

Euclidean Geometry – a mathematical system attributed to Alexandrian Greek mathematician Euclid, which he described in his textbook on geometry: the Elements.

Euler Line – the Euler line, named after Leonhard Euler, is a line determined from any triangle that is not equilateral.

Euler’s Formula – a mathematical formula in complex analysis that establishes the fundamental relationship between the trigonometric functions and the complex exponential function.

Evaluate – to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of; assess: to evaluate the results of an experiment.

Even Function – even functions and odd functions are functions which satisfy particular symmetry relations, with respect to taking additive inverses.

Even Number – a whole number that is able to be divided by two into two equal whole numbers The numbers 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are even numbers.

Event – In probability theory, an event is an outcome or defined collection of outcomes of a random experiment.

Exclusive (Interval) – Excluding the endpoints of an interval. For example, “the interval from 1 to 2, exclusive” means the open interval written either (1, 2) or ]1, 2[.

Expand – To expand a bracket means to multiply each term in the bracket by the expression outside the bracket.

Expected Value – an anticipated value for an investment at some point in the future.

Experiment – any activity with an observable result.

Explicit Differentiation – a function that is expressed clearly.

Explicit Formula Of A Sequence – a formula we can use to find the nth term of a sequence. In the easiest definition, explicit means exact or definite.

Explicit Function – a mathematical function containing only the independent variable or variables —opposed to implicit function.

Exponent – a symbol written above and to the right of a mathematical expression to indicate the operation of raising to a power.

Exponent Rules – The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication.

Exponential Decay – When a population or group of something is declining, and the amount that decreases is proportional to the size of the population, it’s called exponential decay

Exponential Function – a mathematical function denoted by f(x)=\exp or e^{x}.

Exponential Growth –  process that increases quantity over time.

Exponential Model – a mathematical model in which the variable is in the exponent.

Exponentiation – mathematical operation, written as bn, involving two numbers, the base b and the exponent or power n, and pronounced as “b raised to the power of n”.

Expression – a finite combination of symbols that is well-formed according to rules that depend on the context.

Exterior Angle – the angle between a side of a polygon and an extended adjacent side.

Extraneous Solution – a solution, such as that to an equation, that emerges from the process of solving the problem but is not a valid solution to the problem.

Extreme Value Theorem – In calculus, the extreme value theorem states that if a real-valued function f is continuous on the closed interval [a, b], then f must attain a maximum and a minimum, each at least once.
