Math speak can be confusing at times, but it’s important to know the correct terminology if you’re to understand math problems.

To help out, for the letter M specifically, I’ve listed some of the most common math-related words:

Magic Square – a square array of numbers, usually positive integers, is called a magic square if the sums of the numbers in each row, each column, and both main diagonals are the same.

Magnitude – a property which determines whether the object is larger or smaller than other objects of the same kind.

Major Arc – the longer arc connecting two endpoints on a circle.

Major Axis – the axis of an ellipse that passes through the two foci.

Mantissa – the fractional part of the common (base-10) logarithm.

Markup – the difference between the selling price of a product and cost price.

Mass – the amount of matter an object contains.

Match – When two similar objects can be identified on the basis of their common properties, the process is known as matching.

Mathematics – an area of knowledge, which includes the study of such topics as numbers.

Matrix – a rectangular array or table of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns, which is used to represent a mathematical object or a property of such an object.

Maximize – the mathematical process of finding the maximum value of a function.

Mean – a quantity that has a value intermediate between those of the extreme members of some set.

Measurement Units – A unit of measurement describes one unit of a quantity.

Median – the middle value in a list ordered from smallest to largest.

Metric System – a system of measurement that succeeded the decimalised system based on the meter that had been introduced in France in the 1790s.

Midpoint – In geometry, the midpoint is the middle point of a line segment.

Mile – A unit of length equal to exactly 1.609344 kilometers.

Million – 1 million means one thousand thousand, in math.

Millimeter – A unit of length equal to one thousandth (10−3 ) of a meter, or 0.0394 inch.

Minor Arc – the shorter arc connecting two endpoints on a circle.

Minor Axis – The shortest diameter of an ellipse.

Minus – Also known as subtraction, is an arithmetic operation that represents the operation of removing objects from a collection.

Mixed Fraction – an improper fraction written as the sum of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Mode – the most frequently occurring value on the list.

Model – a description of a system using mathematical concepts and language.

Modulus – a system of arithmetic for integers, where numbers “wrap around” when reaching a certain value.

Moire Pattern – large-scale interference patterns that can be produced when an opaque ruled pattern with transparent gaps is overlaid on another similar pattern.

Majority  – the greater part, or more than half, of the total.

Money – a commodity accepted by general consent as a medium of economic exchange.

More Than – bigger or greater than, shown with the symbol >

Most – the greatest amount or quantity.

Multiple – a number that may be divided by another a certain number of times without a remainder.

Multiplication – the process of combining matrices, vectors, or other quantities under specific rules to obtain their product.

Mutually Exclusive Events – two events are mutually exclusive or disjoint if they cannot both occur at the same time.
