From Bar graphs to Beta and Boxplot, I’ve put together a list of some of the most important and best math-related words starting with the letter B.

Math Words That Start With B

Back Substitution – The process of solving a linear system of equations that has been transformed into row-echelon form or reduced row-echelon form.

Bakers Dozen – a group of 13; a dozen plus one: from the former practice among bakers and other tradespeople of giving 13 items to the dozen as a safeguard against penalties for short weights and measures.

Bankrupt – a person who loses everything they own and becomes insolvent.

Bar Graph – a chart that plots data using rectangular bars or columns.

Base – refers to a particular mathematical object that is used as a building block.

Base (Geometry) – a side of a polygon or a face of a polyhedron, particularly one oriented perpendicular to the direction in which height is measured, or on what is considered to be the “bottom” of the figure.

Base Of A Triangle – The bottom line of a triangle is the base of the triangle, and it can be one of the three sides of the triangle.

Bearing – the angle in degrees measured clockwise from north.

Behind – The position of the object that indicates the location in the back side of another object.

Below – The position of the object that indicates the location under another object.

Benchmark – a basis of comparison used to measure something.

Bernoulli Trials – a Bernoulli trial (or binomial trial) is a random experiment with exactly two possible outcomes, “success” and “failure”, in which the probability of success is the same every time the experiment is conducted.

Beta – the beta function, also called the Euler integral of the first kind, is a special function that is closely related to the gamma function and to binomial coefficients.

Between – Between numbers lie in the middle of two numbers.

Bias – A systematic (built-in) error which makes all values wrong by a certain amount.

Biconditional – A biconditional statement is a combination of a conditional statement and its converse written in the if and only if form.

Bigger – bigger or greater than is depicted by the symbol <.

Binomial – an algebraic expression of the sum or the difference of two terms.

Binomial Coefficients – The binomial coefficient is the number of ways of picking unordered outcomes from possibilities, also known as a combination or combinatorial number.

Binomial Probability Formula – Binomial probability refers to the probability of exactly x successes on n repeated trials in an experiment which has two possible outcomes (commonly called a binomial experiment).

Binomial Theorem – In elementary algebra, the binomial theorem (or binomial expansion) describes the algebraic expansion of powers of a binomial.

Bisect – to divide into two equal parts. to cut or split into two.

Borrowing – To subtract numbers with more than one digit: write down the larger number first and the smaller number directly below it.

Boundary Value Problem – a system of ordinary differential equations with a solution and derivative values specified at more than one point.

Bounded Function – A bounded function is a function that its range can be included in a closed interval.

Bounded Sequence – A sequence is a bounded sequence if it is bounded above and bounded below. If a sequence is not bounded, it is an unbounded sequence.

Bounded Set Of Geometric Points – A figure or a set of points in a plane or in space that can be enclosed in a finite rectangle or box.

Box – A Box is a polyhedron with all its faces in a rectangular shape.

Boxplot – A box and whisker plot—also called a box plot—displays the five-number summary of a set of data.

Braces – To denote grouping of mathematical terms.

Brackets – Mathematical brackets are symbols, such as parentheses, that are most often used to create groups or clarify the order that operations are to be done in an algebraic expression.
