Looking for math words that start with S?

From Scale to Symmetry and everything in between, there are a lot of words beginning with S that are used in math terminology.

To help you out, I’ve put together a list of the most common math-related words I was able to find:

Math Words That Start With S

Same – is equal to, the = symbol.

Scale – the ratio of the length of any object in relation to the actual length of the same object in the real world.

Scalene Triangle – a triangle that has three unequal sides.

Scaling – multiplying every linear dimension of an object by the same factor.

Scatter Plot – a set of points plotted on a horizontal and vertical axes.

Segment – a part of a line or curve between two points.

Semicircle – a one-dimensional locus of points that forms half of a circle.

Septagon – A 7-sided polygon also called a Heptagon.

Sequence – sets of numbers that follow a pattern or a rule.

Series – a description of the operation of adding infinitely many quantities, one after the other, to a given starting quantity.

Shape – a geometric figure such as a square, triangle, or rectangle.

Shortest – measuring a small distance from end to end.

Simplify – to reduce (an equation, fraction, etc) to a simpler form by cancellation of common factors, regrouping of terms in the same variable, etc.

Simultaneous Equations – equations involving two or more unknowns that are to have the same values in each equation.

Sine Rule – The angles are labeled with capital letters.

Sixths – one of six equal or nearly equal parts of an object, quantity, measurement, etc.

Smaller – Having a size less than another object.

Solid Figure – three-dimensional (3-D) figures that have length, height and width.

Solution – A value or values which, when substituted for a variable in an equation, make the equation true.

Solve – to find a solution.

Sort – to put in a certain place or rank according to kind, class, or nature.

Sphere – the set of all points in three-dimensional space lying the same distance from a given point.

Spline – a special function defined piecewise by polynomials.

Square Unit – the metric unit used to measure area.

Square Root – a factor of a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. 

Stack – a sheaf that takes values in categories rather than sets.

Standard Deviation – a measure of the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values.

Standard Form – a system of writing numbers which can be particularly useful for working with very large or very small numbers.

Stationary Point – a point where the derivative of f(x) is equal to 0.

Statistics – the application of probability theory, a branch of mathematics, to statistics, as opposed to techniques for collecting statistical data.

Straight Angle – an angle of 180°.

Subscript – (of a letter, figure, or symbol) written or printed below the line.

Substitution – Putting values where the letters are.

Subtend – an angle is subtended by an arc, line segment or any other section of a curve when its two rays pass through the endpoints of that arc, line segment or curve section.

Subtraction – an arithmetic operation that represents removing objects from a collection. Subtraction is signified by the minus sign, −.

Successive – following in order.

Superscript – (of a letter, figure, or symbol) written or printed above the line.

Symmetry – a law or operation where a physical property or process has an equivalence in two or more directions.
