What Makes a Good Christmas Word?
I’m a word person and love finding the right words to describe something. Christmas words, in particular, bring to mind the feelings and emotions we experience during the holiday season.
Finding the right word can help bring up nostalgic feelings of Christmas past or help us to focus on what we’re grateful for in the present.
For me, the best Christmas words are anything to do with:
- Being Festive – of course! Christmas is a time of celebration.
- Family – Christmas is a time to be with loved ones.
- Friends – Christmas is also a time to catch up with friends.
- Giving – Christmas is a time of giving, whether it’s giving gifts, time, or energy.
- Nostalgia – Christmas can be a time to remember happy memories from Christmases past.
- Reflection – Christmas can be a time of reflection on the year that has passed and setting goals for the year ahead.
The History Of Christmas
The word ‘Christmas’ actually comes from the old English ‘Cristes maesse’, meaning ‘Christ’s Mass’.
The first recorded Christmas was actually in Rome in 336 AD, although it wasn’t the huge celebration that we know today.
The Christmas we celebrate now with all the trimmings, trees, lights, presents, and turkey didn’t really come about until the Victorian era.
Queen Victoria and her family were really instrumental in making Christmas the family-orientated, consumer holiday that it is today.
Of course, things have come a long way since the Victorian era.
Today, for those who celebrate Christmas, it’s a day for exchanging gifts, eating lots of food, spending time with family and friends, and generally having a good time.
The tradition of Christmas and its origins are fascinating, and there are many interesting facts about this festive holiday.
But for me, Christmas means something different to everyone and that’s fine.
As long as we can all enjoy the festive season, that’s all that matters.
