So, you’re wondering; What does the red heart mean on Snapchat?
Emojis tell a story on Snapchat, and there is also a best friend system that Snapchat uses to show you who your best friends are.
The red heart means you have been each other’s No. 1 best friend for two weeks in a row, Snapchat calls this emoji ‘BFF’.
I bet you send and receive a lot of snaps with the person you have a red heart with, right?
What Does the Red Heart Mean on Snapchat?
If you see a red heart on your friend’s profile it means that the two of you are ‘BFFs’!
At least in Snapchat’s eyes, but I’m sure you are anyway as it means you’re sending this person a lot of snaps.
In fact, when you see a red heart next to someone’s profile it means they are the person you’ve been snapping the most with for two weeks in a row now.
So, there you have it – it’s as simple as that.
I think this feature Snapchat has of assigning emojis to people on your friend list is really cool.
It makes it easy to see who you’re snapping and chatting with most as well as who you have the longest snapping streaks with.
What Are Best Friends on Snapchat?
Snapchat has a best friend feature where they essentially rank your friends with emojis based on how much you’re snapping with each other.
You can have up to 8 Best Friends that will be given emojis to represent how much you’re snapping with them, and they seem to update the data pretty regularly.
People can see if they’re one of your best friends, but others outside of your besties cannot see who your best friends are.
You can’t decide which friends have which emojis next to their names, if you want someone to have the red heart you’re going to have to snap them more than anyone else for two weeks!
What’s After the Red Heart on Snapchat?
After the red heart, there is one more heart to achieve on Snapchat and that’s the pink heart, which actually looks like two hearts.
There is also a yellow heart that comes before the red heart.
The complete current heart ranking system for besties is:
- Yellow heart emoji – This is the first of the heart emojis and means you’re best friends with someone and the two of you send each other the most Snaps.
- Red heart emoji – This is the next heart color and as I’ve discussed it means you’ve been each other’s best friend for two weeks in a row!
- Pink heart emoji – This is the final heart color and means you’ve been each other’s best friend for two months in a row!

What Do the Other Smileys Mean on Snapchat?
There are a load of smiley emojis that appear next to your friends’ names on Snapchat outside of the three hearts I’ve covered above.
Some of the most popular emojis I’m sure you’ve seen are:
Smiley face with sunglasses – Snapchat gives someone who is a ‘Mutual BF’ this emoji. It means they’re one of your best snapchatting best friends.
Grimacing face – This face always makes me laugh! This means you’re the person’s no. 1 best friend and they’re also your no. 1 best friend.
Smiling smiley – The smiling smiley is the emoji used for ‘BFs’. This means they’re one of your best friends so you’re snapping each other a lot, but they’re not your bestie.
There are also various other emojis such as a birthday cake, timer, fire, and so on. It’s pretty cool having all these emojis!
You should now be an expert in Snapchat emojis, a little information to impress your friends with!
The red heart means that you’ve been best friends with someone for two weeks straight, so I’m sure whoever you see the heart next to is someone close to you!
